There’s nothing like seeing something or someone who truly motivates you. There are a number of things that motivate me but, one of those things are girl power movies.
For instance, when Linda Hamilton plays Sarah Conner in “The Terminator” (thanks for the photo google images) and kicks major ass. There are loads of girl power movies that make me feel that way. When I leave the theater I almost hope for some hooligan to try and come mess with me….I’m so empowered just by seeing the movie that I’m actually convinced for an hour or so that even I could take down a 6’8″ linebacker of a man with ill intentions. For the record, just writing this post has me thinking I’m a freaking powerhouse (even though my quads are so sore at present that I’m making every effort to be very efficient every time I have to get up) 😉 Haha!!
On an academic level, people like;
Albert Einstein
Helen Keller
can motivate me to believe I can conquer learning disabilities to learn more and be better on an academic level.
As a fitness trainer I have to (and enjoy) motivating people to be healthy. Everyone is so different as to what motivates them. As I’m helping clients through a workout, some of them need me to tell them how good they are doing and that they can get through it. Other’s wish I would vanish on the spot and just let them get their work done. In this aspect, I need to learn to read my clients and what they need or don’t need to motivate them through their workout.
When it comes to nutrition, are you someone that has to be around people that are making all good choices to stay on track or are you disciplined enough to be able to say “NO” to the piece of cake even though you may be the only one in the room not eating it. What or who motivates you to stay on your nutrition band wagon?
In the end
MOTIVATION
Is what drives us to do whatever it is we are doing. It could be something effecting us negatively in our life or positively. You have to be the one to decide which it will be. So, what motivates you and what are you doing with that motivation? Is it negative or positive? Would you change it?
Great first blog post, Molly. You already know I can be disciplined with the right motivation. My motivation usually comes from an image or accomplishment for which I’m striving. I keep that in my mind and it helps me to stay on course in whatever I’m doing. That said, it doesn’t always work because I’m human and therefore fallible.
In the end, my biggest motivation is that I’m stubborn and competitive with myself. If I want something, I can’t stand not getting it. 😉
Agreed Ging. I think I could’ve written your response for you 😉 LOL Thanks for commenting 🙂
I used to have Sarah Connor arms! lol! Not nearly as fit as I used to be, I have to admit I struggle with maintaining my motivation. Great post!
Thank You Serena!! We can all use help finding and maintaining motivation. Hopefully this post will generate some ideas! 😀
Great post, Molly! I love strong woman characters in movies and life, as well.
I don’t think I suffer from lack of motivation. What I lack is FOCUS! I get distracted easily and there I go, off in a new direction.
Indeed Lynette!! I have the same focus problem to be sure! That’s part of that learning disability that I talked about in that post. Thanks for the compliment! 🙂
Great post, Molly and very very good as a first one. Motivation…hmmm. some days it’s high and somedays it’s not. I do find it’s easier to stay motivated for things i like (intellectual pursuits of all sorts) and harder for those that seem like work (exercise and personal care). guess that makes me pretty typical
Thank you Louise! 🙂 You are so right about your feelings being typical. If only we all liked everything we wanted and needed to do! Wouldn’t that be awesome!?!!
Way to go Molly. Great post, even with me hitting you and bugging you throughout your writing process.
For me motivation is all about the end result and what that end result will look like. With that said, I also try to stay present to what the end result is and not lift up my motivation so that it becomes all or nothing. When that happens, I find I tend to miss out on life’s “little moments” that really do matter more than my 100% discipline to my goal. Make sense?
I’m rambling, sorry. 🙂
Thanks Sandra! You certainly didn’t bug me and I don’t recall all this hitting you speak of. Maybe a little encouraging nudging 😉
I do understand your meaning. Although your finish line isn’t far from your mind so your motivation stays present, you don’t let it take over so you miss the journey.
I never saw the Terminator, but I LOVE G.I. Jane for the same reason.
OOOO, I love G.I. Jane too!!! I think I need to watch that one again someday soon!
I can’t imagine ever looking like kick-butt Linda Hamilton, so tough for me to draw motivation there (although I enjoy her movies). I do a lot better with personal encouragement, even if it’s an email sent to thousands of people (which I get from the online fitness program I use). As for food – no motivation there; that’s definitely one of my weaknesses. If others I’m with are eating fattening stuff I like (and I almost always do) then I have to eat it too. Luckily, my coworker who used to instigate going out to lunch decided he needed to lose weight and started packing, so I no longer have to struggle to say no to eating out!
Nutrition is my biggest weakness too Jennette! I’m also with you on the personal encouragement. That’s always worked best for me too.
Fantastic post, Molly! I have to admit, I’ve actually never seen The Terminator, but it’s on my to-watch list for the year.
I’ve been trying really hard to figure out what will motivate me to try and shed my grad school weight, and it’s been difficult. Right now, I’m trying to focus on the fact that exercise and healthy eating will make me feel better… and help me fit into my clothes a bit better. 🙂
Thanks Lena! It’s hard to find what will motivate you sometimes. That’s part of what led me to write this post. My hope is that someone might have an idea for motivation that will be new to someone else. We all need motivation in our lives for everything we do right down to getting out of bed in the morning. If we keep hunting, we will find what makes us move ;o)
I loved Linda Hamilton – she was tough. Lots of great female characters and historical figures to be inspired by for sure. Great post.
Thanks Lisa! I couldn’t agree with you more!
Sarah Connor certainly does motivate me! Writing for my characters does as well. I found myself working out like crazy about a year and a half ago, I think I was mentally preparing myself for my protagonist. I lost a bunch of weight and now I am cold all the time. LOL Great post Molly! Welcome to the world of blogging. 😀
Thanks Debra! It’s fun that your characters can motivate you in your life. I suppose it’s only not fun if they have you motivated to live a harmful lifestyle 😉 LOL! Congrats on the weight loss and healthier living. You need to get yourself some nice footy socks and lots of layers for the rest of you! 😀
